Lithium elemental and isotopic disequilibrium in minerals from peridotite xenoliths from far-east Russia: Product of recent melt/fluid–rock reaction

چکیده
Lithium concentrations and isotopic compositions of coexisting olivine and clinopyroxene (cpx) in well-characterized peridotite xenoliths from Tok (SE Siberian craton) and samples from two other far-east Russian localities reveal strong elemental and isotopic disequilibria, which correlates with bulk rock composition. Lithium concentrations in cpx from Tok (1–12 ppm) are equal to or significantly greater than those in coexisting olivines (1–5 ppm). The Li-rich cpx show core to rim zoning, indicative of Li infiltration from the grain boundaries. Olivines are generally unzoned, although Li concentrations can vary significantly from grain to grain. D varies from 0.2 to 1.0, which is lower than that expected for equilibrium partitioning (Deq=1.1 to 2.0), and reflects preferential Li enrichment in cpx. The Li isotopic compositions of both minerals range far beyond normal mantle δLi of ∼ +4±2. δLicpx (−0.8 to −14.6) is systematically lighter than δLi of coexisting olivine (−1.7 to +11.9), and ΔLiol-cpx varies from 2.8 to 22.9‰. The greatest elemental and isotopic disequilibria occur in the most fertile samples (lherzolites) and may reflect longer equilibration times and/or enhanced melt permeability in the more refractory samples. Collectively, these observations suggest that the peridotite minerals experienced Li addition via diffusion from a grain boundary melt or fluid shortly before or coincident with their entrainment into the host basalt (i.e., within tens of thousands of years, based on published diffusion coefficients for Li in cpx at the temperatures of equilibration). This diffusional ingress of Li generated large kinetic isotopic fractionation, leading to unusually light cpx and heavier olivines. Thus, low δLicpx do not reflect the influence of an exotic mantle component related to crustal recycling. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abnormal lithium isotope composition from the ancient lithospheric mantle beneath the North China Craton
Lithium elemental and isotopic compositions of olivines in peridotite xenoliths from Hebi in the North China Craton provide direct evidence for the highly variable δ(7)Li in Archean lithospheric mantle. The δ(7)Li in the cores of olivines from the Hebi high-Mg# peridotites (Fo > 91) show extreme variation from -27 to +21, in marked deviation from the δ(7)Li range of fresh MORB (+1.6 to +5.6) al...

The Kuhshah ultramafic complex is located in the south-east of Sanandaj-Sirjan metamorphic zone, near the probable remnants of Neotethys plate in Iran. It consists of highly depleted harzburgites, dunites, chromitite bands and altered gabbros. The ultramafic parts have been intruded by numerous clinopyroxenite dykes and veins. In the harzburgites, there are different generations of olivine, ort...

Xenoliths of metamorphic country rocks are locally abundant within breccia sequences in gabbroic to troctolitic rocks of the Voisey's Bay Intrusion, Labrador, Canada. Thermochemical interaction with mafic magma has produced restite assemblages in the xenoliths that are composed of Ca-rich plagioclase, corundum, hercynite and minor magnetite. Hercynite was produced as a result of the breakdown o...
متن کاملFirst direct evidence of sedimentary carbonate recycling in subduction-related xenoliths
Carbon in rocks and its rate of exchange with the exosphere is the least understood part of the carbon cycle. The amount of carbonate subducted as sediments and ocean crust is poorly known, but essential to mass balance the cycle. We describe carbonatite melt pockets in mantle peridotite xenoliths from Dalihu (northern China), which provide firsthand evidence for the recycling of carbonate sedi...

Mantle-derived xenoliths brought to the Earth’s Surface by basalts are important windows to understand composition, evolution and processes of the lithospheric mantle. The lithosphere of the southeastern China is dominated by peridotite or lherzolite [1, 2]. The spinel peridotite xenoliths studied are from Fangshan basalt, eastern China, which are composed of olivine, clinopyroxene, orthopyroxe...
